- Value Village thrift store (formerly Bargain Hunters):
"To get to Value Village (a thrift store, so WYSIWYG), to
make it simple, I'll give directions from Sharon Amity. (I can
alter these for anyone who needs me to do so.) From Sharon
Amity, turn onto Central Avenue (you'll turn left if you're
coming down Sharon Amity from Independence, and right if
you're coming from the university area). You'll cross Roseland
Ave. (the first light after Sharon Amity on Central), where you
will see a small club called Mayday's on the right. You will
pass an apartment complex called Darby Acres on the right.
Then, you will see a shopping center on the right called
Darby Terrace. This is where Value Village is. It's the large
store roughly in the middle of the shopping center. I don't
guarantee that any of you will find anything, but it has really
surprised me a few times. You'll probably want to scour the
store, if you're a serious thrifter like I am."
"it's on 10th Street across
from Piedmont Open Middle School. Galore is kinda small, it's
very independently owned. She gets a lot of cool smoking-jacket type items
for men, and she may have cool shoes."
"*Galore is on 10th Street across from Piedmont Open Middle
School. Take Central Avenue, heading into the downtown
area (which means if you were coming from Bargain Hunters,
you would turn right out of the parking lot onto Central),
until you're at the weird intersection (i.e. three roads meet
up in one spot: Central, Louise Ave. and 10th St.) where
Swing 1000 and the Salvation Army sit across from each
other (it's literally the 1000 block of Central Avenue, so that
should help out). You'll notice that at this traffic light, there's
another road that branches off at the right from Central - that
is 10th St. Take 10th St. and you won't go far until you'll see
a grey and pink house on the left, which should have quite
a lot of clothes on the porch. That's *Galore, and you can
park in the school parking lot and walk across the street."

- Mixed Media:
Mixed Media is a small used CD, record & book shop (hence the name).
It's at 2007 Commonwealth Avenue, just around the corner from Thomas
St. Tavern. To get there from Central Avenue coming from downtown,
simply turn right at the Plaza, turn right on Commonwealth and then
turn right into the Mixed Media parking lot (it should be the first
building on the right after the fire station). If you're coming down
Central from the Eastland Mall area, turn left onto the Plaza and follow
the above directions from there. If you're visiting Hysteric Glamour or
Boris & Natasha's, all you have to do is turn left out of the parking lot,
turn left onto Commonwealth and make a left into the first parking
lot you see. It's a small brick building shared with a hydroponics shop.
At Mixed Media, I've found used Legendary Pink Dots, as well as stuff
like The Fall, Brian Eno, Patti Smith and other electronic/indie/punk
type music. The emphasis seems to be on non-mainstream music of
all kinds, no one genre in particular. I haven't checked out their vinyl
selection quite as extensively, but I did see a rare early R.E.M. record.
The book selection includes some good horror titles and a lot of sci-fi.
Their phone number is (704) 344-9988.
